December & January Favourites

December & January Favourites

December and January have been months that haven’t really felt months. For half of December I was struck down with a kidney infection that left me resembling either a kitten or Bambi on ice – depending on popular references. And for most of January I was either delirious with pain (I wish I was exaggerating) or in hospital. This means I’ve done a lot of lying down, so naturally all or nearly all of my favourites are something you can do lying down.

1) My first favourite is simple, it’s a blanket. I found a blanket on Amazon that’s microfibre on one side and fleece on the other, and it’s amazing. It also keeps the gent warm when I have windows open, and the fans on in the Winter chill (thanks burning feet). A plus, it’s big enough to snuggle under, and it’s very very warm.

2) My second favourite is a little more obscure. Because of the problems I’ve been having with my feet, I live with ice packs. I mean that literally. There’s usually not an hour that goes by that I don’t have a new icepack attached my feet – the only thing that stops me from strapping them to my feet is that my feet warm them up. I’d say it’s impressive, but it’s not … is it?. Since I’m a connoisseur of ice packs my favourites are these.

3) Being mostly bed, or couch bound means my strength isn’t up to par, nor my dexterity because apparently my hands are effected too. However, I’ve found a really handy doodad. And yes, it is a doodad. It’s a jar and bottle opener, and it’s just marvellous. Even if your hands function normally I thoroughly recommend getting your hands on one.

4) Now, I wouldn’t be an ill person worth their salt if I didn’t mention Netflix for Amazon. The amount of TV and movies I watched this month or rather these past few months is monumental. I’m almost ashamed to admit how much TV I’ve watched. During the kidney infection I didn’t really want to do anything that involved thinking. My mental faculties were so out of it that all I did was watch animated movies for hours on end. But, the one movie that sticks out as Hotel Transylvania. It was cheesy, funny, and easy to watch. Three things I want when I’m watching something whilst ill.

5) And, lastly the Amazon Echo Dot. I wish this list wasn’t full of Amazon related products, but alas. Bed is where I’ve been spending my time, so there’s not much I’ve been able to do but window shop, and occasionally actually shop. The Dot has been a new discovery. At first I was hesitant to delve into the world of smart house technology – I had nightmares of Alexa going off in the middle of the night. But, I saw how much it had helped others with disabilities, and I decided to give it a go.

I can honestly say it’s changed my life. It’s made simple things – like changing music whilst up and about, so much easier. I can add reminders there and then, instead of putting them off until my hands don’t ache. For bad days I can even set medication reminders that are annoying enough I’ll listen to them. And, I’ve found a number of Alexa programs that keep me entertained (poop facts is surprisingly educational).

And, that’s it for December & January! I’m hoping now things are starting to look up health wise (post on this soon), I’ll be able to get out and experience some out of the house things soon. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
