Hippeas Organic Chick Pea Puffs Salt & Vinegar Vibes [Review]
Hippeas Organic Chick Pea Puffs Salt & Vinegar Vibes 78g
I picked up the Hippeas Organic Chick Pea Puffs Salt & Vinegar Vibes on a whim at a service station.
The Hippeas Organic Chick Pea Puffs Salt & Vinegar Vibes are vegan, organic, dairy free, gluten free, and maize free. They’re not exactly IBS friendly as they’re made from chickpea, so they might upset a lot of stomaches. However, they do not contain potatoes! So, for those of you that cannot eat potatoes for either allergy or intolerance reasons, these are perfect for you.
For me, they’re not so perfect. I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting from the Hippeas Organic Chick Pea Puffs Salt & Vinegar Vibes. I’ve had a form of quinoa puffs before, and they reminded me of Wotsits. The Hippea puffs were different. To start they almost look like pastry, in the sense that they are a close texture, with the occasional hole.
Upon first taste I was confused, upon second taste I was puzzled, upon third I figured I kind of liked them, but ultimately decided that I didn’t. They are rather different to anything I’ve tasted before, and I’m not sure that’s in a good way. Nowadays, I’m eating a lot of ‘potato alternatives in an attempt to appease my gallbladder. A lot of the time the ‘crisps’ are popped or have been cooked in a way that means they can slap ‘less fat’ on the packaging. Hippeas have multiple (good) labels on the back of the packaging: No MSG, vegan, gluten free, high fibre, no trans-fat, a source of protein dairy free, corn free, no preservatives.
There’s a sweetness to the Hippeas Organic Chick Pea Puffs Salt & Vinegar Vibes that I really can’t place. It seems like there’s too much sweetness to just be attributed to a little bit of sugar, and it’s the taste that ultimately gets left in your mouth. The original taste is good, but I can’t get paste the taste that gets left on my pallet. As to the salt and vinegar taste, it’s there, but not really. The chickpea overwhelms the salt and vinegar taste, and they don’t really smell like most salt and vinegar crisps, which probably reflects the lack of taste.
I got the Gent to try them, and he said they tasted like peanuts, which definitely wasn’t what I felt. So, it seems to definitely depends on your pallet, as with all food. The Gent, well let’s just say he has a more complex pallet, in the sense he doesn’t have any problems with food or allergies.
As a bonus, it seems you can leave the package open for weeks, and they don’t change in taste. A positive if you’re forgetful like myself!
Overall, I like the idea, and I love that nowadays there are more and more alternatives to crisps, however the Hippeas Organic Chick Pea Puffs Salt & Vinegar Vibes just aren’t for me. They are great for those that can’t tolerate corn as that’s become a big alternative to the usual potato. Maybe one day I’ll try them again, maybe, but for now I’ll give them a pass when I do my weekly shop.
