Tesco Free From Popped Potato Chips [Review]

Tesco, a little bit more seasoning couldn’t hurt!

Tesco Free From Popped Potato Chips are milk, wheat, and gluten free! That’s a good way to start by my books. Since I’ve had three gallstone attacks over the past few months, I’ve had to change my diet – even more than usual. The aim of the game nowadays is low fat, as low as I can possibly get.

Before the gallstones, crisps were my biggest weakness, after the gallstones … well, they’re still my biggest weakness. I’ve never really been one for high fatty foods, being intolerant to dairy and lactose has a hand in that, but crisps have been the one thing I can generally eat when out. It’s more an accessibility issue. Crisps easy to find on the road, and I can keep them by me if the kitchen is too far. 

The Tesco Free From Popped Potato Chips are new addition to Tesco’s Free From range, and are suitable for vegans, gluten free, milk free, and wheat free (different to being gluten free). Per bag they are also rather low in saturated fat for a bag of chips at 0.1g. The rest of the stats are on their website

Let’s get in to the most important bit, the taste. Upon first touch to the tongue, there’s a flavour burst. However, within a few seconds of eating them, the taste disappears, and you’re left with crispy rice flour. It’s not bad, just disappointing. I guess part of the problem is that the Tesco Free From Popped Potato Chips are thick when compared to other popped chips, which means that there’s a gap in the flavour. However, if you’re not one for the eye watering overpowering flavour of some crisps (particularly when it comes to salt and vinegar flavours), then these are a good solution.

In terms of the flavour, the sour cream and onion is one of the better sour cream free from flavours I’ve tried. It seems that this year is the year of free from sour cream as it’s only been the past few months I’ve seen sour cream flavours pop up! Whilst it’s a good flavour, it does stick with you, the onion is very strong, and according to my partner my breath is quite something. The salt and vinegar popped chips are about standard for salt and vinegar crisps, but the flavour doesn’t last as long as the sour cream, which is a shame. 

Overall, they’re not too bad! They’re portioned well, and I’m so glad there are more and more options for free from crisps that are lower in fat, especially saturated fat. However, in terms of taste, Popchips are superior – you don’t have a few seconds of test then it disappears. The Popchips taste sticks with you, in a good way. Truth be told, if you find them on offer you’ll get more in terms of value and taste from a big Popchips than four separate bag. But this isn’t a review about Popchips (though there will be one soon), for what Tesco are offering, I think some refinement could make them even better, but it’s a damn good start to expanding their free from lines to include multiple allergens. Well done Tesco! 

Now, if they could only become IBS friendly too the world would be a better place!
